Job Description:
Assistant Teacher

Works closely with the Lead Teacher to plan, implement and develop curriculum appropriate for a classroom while monitoring each child's development. Provides support to the teacher, assists in lesson preparation, sets up the classroom and materials, and provides supervision to children.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of early childhood development (birth to six years) curriculum development and implementation, positive discipline and early childhood learning strategies
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • A comprehensive knowledge of indicators and effects of maltreatment, abuse and neglect on children, nutrition, health, safety and special needs
  • Ability to be flexible in schedule of works hours and days to best meet the needs of the child care center
  • Knowledge and competent use of the internet, email and Word office suite
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and share information on a "need to know" basis only
  • Ability to work effectively with data and have analytical capabilities
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergent situations
  • Models a positive and respectful attitude at work
  • Demonstrates initiative, personal balance and a sense of humor
  • Ability to adapt and work effectively under pressure
  • Listens actively and uses effective conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent communications skills, written, verbal and non-verbal
  • Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
  • Ability to represent the program positively within the community
  • Ability to work with parents and their children in a warm, calming, respectful, encouraging and patient manner

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES
  • A current clearance from the Criminal History Registry
  • Current First Aid and Pediatric CPR card required upon date of hire
  • Food Handler's card required upon date of hire
  • Annual Mandatory Reporter/Child Abuse and Neglect Training
  • Required to maintain 24 hours of annual continuing education
  • Step 7 on the ORO registry


EXPERIENCE
  • Two years' experience in an early childhood program working with children and families
  • Bilingual skills preferred
